Wat Pho Chai, Nong Khai

History

According to legend, three Buddha images, named Phra Soem, Phra Suk and Phra Sai, were made for the three daughters of the King of Lan Chang (Laos). In the reign of King Rama III, they were taken across the Mekong River to Nong Khai. However, Phra Suk was lost in the river during a storm. During the reign of King Rama IV, Phra Soem was taken to Bangkok and is now at Wat Pathum Wanaram. Phra Sai remains enshrined at Wat Pho Chai, which has become a popular pilgrimage site as a result.

What to see

In addition to the principal Buddha image, cast from gold and in the posture of subduing Mara, Wat Pho Chai has an almost cruciform-shaped ordination hall with some very colorful murals. There is a ceremony to worship Phra Sai on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month each year.

Getting there

The temple is on Prajak Sillipakhom Road, not far from the bus station, and can be reached by bicycle or on foot from the Mut Mee Guesthouse.
