Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya

Wat Mahathat is an important temple in Ayutthaya.

History

One of Ayutthaya's kings dreamed there was a holy relic buried beneath the ground at this location and ordered a temple to be built on the spot.

What to see

A must-see at the temple is the iconic stone Buddha head trapped in the roots of a large tree.

Getting there

The temple is within walking distance of the guesthouse area around Soi 2, but cycling is a better idea.
