Wat Phra That Doi Tung, Mae Sai

History

Wat Phra That Doi Tung is situated on top of Doi Tung Mountain, at an elevation of about 2,000 meters, 50 kilometers south of Mae Sai town.

Wat Phra That Doi Tung was built in the 10th century and renovated by Chiang Rai's most famous ruler, King Mengrai, during the 13th century and then by the famous monk, Khruba Siwichai, at the beginning of the 20th century.

What to see

The temple complex features twin Lanna-style chedis, one of which is said to contain the left collarbone of the Buddha.

Getting there

The temple can be reached via a picturesque 40-kilometer mountain road from Mae Sai. Buses and song-taew run from Mae Sai to Ban Huay Khrai (25 baht), and from there song-taew are available to Doi Tung (60 baht, one hour).
