According to legend, Wat Ku Kut was founded by Queen Chama Thewi. It probably dates from around 1150.
The importance of the temple is that it contains one of the last surviving examples of Dvaravati architecture, the Mahapol Chedi, also known as the Suwan Chang Kot Chedi. There is also the octagonal Ratana Chedi, thought to have been built at the beginning of the 13th century by King Sabbasiddhi.
The temple is a 10-minute walk west of the bus stop for buses arriving from Chiang Mai.
