Phra Pathom Chedi, Nakhon Pathom

History

Phra Pathom Chedi dates back to the Dvaravati period.

What to see

The huge chedi is surrounded by a circular cloister with halls at the cardinal points. Overlooking the north entrance is the standing Phra Ruang Rochanarit Buddha. On the steps of the south entrance is a seated white Buddha from the Dvaravati period. To the west is a hall enshrining the Phra Nirantaray image of the Buddha seated beneath the Bodhi tree along with some sacred relics. The relic hall has painted murals of celestial beings. To the east is a hall enshrining a large reclining Buddha, with beautiful black laquer and gold door designs.

In alcoves on the outside of the cloister there are 80 Buddha statues, many in rarely seen postures. Another Dvaravati-period seated Buddha is housed in an outer hall to the west of the chedi.

Getting there

The minivan from Bangkok's Victory Monument stops outside the chedi's north entrance.
