Tak Province lies between Myanmar (Burma) and Sukhothai province in the lower north. Situated on the River Ping, the provincial capital is a quiet country town with a population of 20,000. It can be reached from Bangkok's Mor Chit bus station by airconditioned bus in about 7 hours. Regular minibuses run to Kamphaeng Phet (1 hour) and Mae Sot (2 hours). From the bus station, it's a 15-minute walk to the town's main temple and another 5-10 minutes into the town center, where there are some very picturesque wooden buildings.
